Zinc oxide is an oxide of zinc, poorly soluble in water, but soluble in acids and strong bases.  It is a white solid, so it is also called zinc white.  It can be obtained by burning zinc or roasting sphalerite (zinc sulfide).  
In nature, zinc oxide is the principal component of the mineral red zinc ore. 
 Artificial zinc oxide can be made in two ways: by oxidizing pure zinc or by baking zinc ore.  Zinc oxide is used as an additive in a variety of materials and products, including plastics, ceramics, glass, cement, lubricants, paints, ovens, adhesives, caulking materials, pigments, food (zinc supplements), batteries, ferrite materials, flame retardant materials and medical emergency bandages.
